Garoppolo's cast of characters hasn't provided the same spark that led the Niners through the 2021 postseason to the NFC Championship. Deebo Samuel, the star caught lightning in a bottle and cashed in for a 3-year, $71. 55 million deal before the season to keep him in the Bay Area, has only gone over 100 yards once this season, a Week 4 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
706%) and 34-17 (. 667%) for the Niners. Not to get overly dramatic, but what more does anyone want? Not to mention a dazzling 5-2 record in the playoffs in his career. The glaring missing piece to the puzzle is a ring, but there are plenty of quarterbacks without jewelry and worse records than are faces of their franchise and have been MVP of the National Football League (*cough* Lamar Jackson). Regardless, Jimmy G's livelihood doesn't matter to me, but the lack of respect for a dude who just wins games is worthy of a paragraph.
"Self-inflicted wounds, really. " SF finished with 346 yards of total offense but was done in by the three turnovers. The usually potent 49ers ground attack totaled just 50 yards on 16 carries for a dismal 3. 1 yards per carry average. On the defensive side of the ball, San Francisco allowed just 289 yards of total offense but were unable to force a turnover in the game. They also allowed the Falcons to go a perfect 3-for-3 in the red zone. The 49ers had two sacks in the game to go along with two QB hits and recorded three tackles for loss against the Falcons.
Time for the ResetLast week, as a neutral, was awesome. Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes dueled it out on the same field they shared for the "Greatest Playoff Game Ever Played" (side note: the writer of this was there! ) that sparked the new playoff OT rules. Unlike last year in KC, the game flipped to the way of the Buffalo Bills. Mahomes was to drive down GEHA Field to overcome a four-point deficit but was quickly intercepted by Taron Johnson.
Like the Chiefs, the Niners have struggled with turnovers, ranking just behind KC at 21st in the NFL in turnover differential. The Niners typically shine on the defensive side of the ball. They rank 2nd in the NFL in scoring defense thus far. They are ranked #2 both against the run and the pass this season. Finally, the Niners are ranked #13 in red zone defensive efficiency. Key Injuries: It was a rough week against Atlanta as starters CB Charvarius Ward (groin) and OT Mike McGlinchey (left calf) left the game at different points and didn't return. DE Nick Bosa (groin) looks like he is ready to return after being limited in practice this week. McGlinchey looks to be a go as well but Ward has yet to practice. Best Bets for this Game Full-Game Side Bet Insiders Status: Rating: KC has been an excellent team on the road under Andy Reid and is 27-8 since 2018. They travel west to battle a Niners deep that is inching towards must-win territory in this game and appears to be getting healthier, at least along the defensive line.
One area of concern for head coach Andy Reid has been the team's penchant for turnovers thus far. KC ranks just 20th in the NFL in turnover differential. On the defensive side of the ball, the Chiefs are 24th in the NFL in scoring defense. They are fourth against the run but a dismal 27th against the pass. Part of that can be attributed to most teams throwing to keep up with the Chiefs but it is still concerning. In the red zone, the Chiefs defense has wilted, ranking just 29th in the NFL in red zone efficiency. Key Injuries: Cornerback Rashad Fenton didn't practice this week but DE Mike Danna and OG Joe Thuney both returned on a limited basis and should be ready to go. In addition, CB Trent McDuffie (hamstring) has practiced all week and may be ready to return.
The Niners have the second-best scoring defense in the NFL, holding their opponents to 14. 8 points a game. Even if McCaffrey plays just a few series, he'll be a big lift for an offense that needs it. Getting DE Nick Bosa back from a groin injury won't hurt along with OT Trent Williams. San Francisco has shown up against good teams; they have recorded a 6-0 ATS record vs. teams with a winning record in their last six attempts. Kansas City, traveling out west after such an emotional game to face the second-best statistical defense in the NFL, doesn't get me too excited...
Early Christmas PresentDespite a 28-14 loss to the Falcons last week with a depleted defense, the 49ers got an early holiday treat midweek when the trade for RB McCaffrey was announced. It is unsure at this time if he will be activated this week but, given his position, it seems likely that head coach Kyle Shanahan can put together at least a limited play set for the All-Pro back. Against the Falcons, the 49ers' offense showed that it could use a multi-purpose threat like McCaffrey after generating just 14 points in a loss that dropped the team to just 3-3 on the season. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw two interceptions and current starting running back Jeff Wilson fumbled resulting in a Falcons touchdown. "I thought we had a lot of opportunities, we just didn't take advantage of them, " Garoppolo said.
Three plays later, the game was over, and everybody shook hands. The Bills sealed a 24-20 win before their week off. A Mahomes interception isn't rare; he was 9th last season with 13 picks, but a mistake in crunch time for the 2018 MVP. Mahomes said, "We had a corner route, and he had dropped back, and I kind of wanted to reset and throw it to him fast [Matt] Milano was in the way, and then by the time I reset and threw to [Skyy Moore], [Johnson] made a great play and got back in there.
As usual, the game came down to the final drive but, this time, QB Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs fell short with Mahomes being picked off by the Bills. Mahomes finished the day 25-of-40 for 338 yards and two touchdowns. He did surprisingly throw two interceptions, including the game-clincher. "It was a great battle. You love these games, " Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.
